Today and the following two weekends we have longer readings from John’s gospel. They are used to augment the progress of converts following the Rite of Christian Initiation as final steps on the road to becoming Catholics. Sadly we haven’t had any candidates for five years.
Today’s theme is thirsting, like the Samaritan woman at the well, for the drink that Jesus offers to give, slaking thirst for ever. He died for us ‘while we were still sinners’. Moses provided water for the Israelites in the wilderness.
ACROSS, taking sick pilgrims by Jumbulance to Lourdes, are looking for nurses and helpers to travel, also offering the opportunity for those with health problems such as stroke, cancer, MS, Motor Neurone Disease etc. The cost is £995, (nurses, and students under 25 pay half) but financial help may be available. Contact Tony Murphy 07881 666974 or tonymurphyefc2002@yahoo.co.uk.
There is a poster about this on the noticeboard. The Bishop leads the group and it is at the end of July 2023.
Not many takers to read spiritual books! In the bookcase left of the exit door there are copies of the book ‘Rediscover Jesus’, which are free for anyone to take. There are also books by the late Cardinal Basil Hume, always helpful and easy to read, and two by the Jesuit priest Gerard W. Hughes, helpful to those who don’t have a good image of God. Do give this a try.
This event takes place every two or three years and about a million young people (18 -35) gather with the Pope from all over the world. The Diocesan Youth organisers invite people to travel with them from our diocese to Lisbon in Portugal. July 31 – August 7 2023. There are a limited number of places available. See the posters on our noticeboard for details of this great adventure.
There is a comprehensive course of lectures with information sheets, available on the Shrewsbury Diocesan website. You can follow all or part of this course at home. www.dioceseofshrewsbury.org. is the contact, and then navigate to Vatican Council.
There are no more Mass Intentions waiting to be offered.
