Bishop Mark Davies has written us a letter about the beginning of Lent.
THE LENTEN BOOKLETS ‘My Day by Day’ and ‘Walk with Me’ are still available price £1 each. The booklets are published by different companies both in Stoke, but together make a helpful prayer guide for Lent. Also in the room by the kitchen there are some samples sent in previous years of Children’s Lenten booklets – help yourself to those and to other booklets on display
The first reading from Genesis reminds us of the story of the loss of innocence of our first ancestors, being tempted by the Devil to disobey God’s one proviso. Paul contrasts the disobedience of Adam with its ill effects, and the benefits coming to us through the saving action of Jesus. In between them is the psalm which is that perfect act of contrition. The Gospel traditionally on the first Sunday of Lent tells of Jesus’ own forty days in the desert, and his being tempted to do the Devil’s bidding.
There are some booklets which have helped children over the years to know more about the Mass and what all the ceremonies and prayers mean. They are available in the church porch. Parents are invited to take one home for their family to read. Everyone can learn something from the booklets, which are offered free by the generosity of the author.
FRIDAY MARCH 3 is the date of the annual World Day of Prayer – it takes place in St John’s church, High Legh, at 7.00pm. The organisers have dropped the ‘Women’s’ from the title. All are welcome.
This day (3 March also) is one of the two days in the year when we are invited to eat less and save money for the starving people in the world. There is a special collection next Sunday for CAFOD, and they write to us saying that this collection will help them also to assist the survivors of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria. You will have seen the pictures of their plight on the TV news.
ACROSS taking sick pilgrims by Jumbulance to Lourdes are looking for nurses and helpers to travel, also those with health problems such as stroke, cancer, MS, Motor Neurone Disease etc. The cost is £995, (nurses, and students under 25 pay half) but financial help may be available. Contact Tony Murphy 07881 666974 or tonymurphyefc2002@yahoo.co.uk.
It was encouraging to have over 100 of you come for ashes on Wednesday. Do keep up your enthusiastic intentions till Easter and beyond. Holy people are usually happy people. God bless you all.
Why not spend some time each day reading books about the devout way of life, (growing in holiness). There are many such books on the bookshelves in the parish rooms near the exit. Just be sure to put your name and the title of the book on the list. By the way, has anyone borrowed the book ‘This Tremendous Lover’ by Eugene Boylan?
