For the next few weeks we travel with Jesus and his disciples on a journey to Jerusalem, where Jesus will eventually be arrested and crucified. Luke’s gospel describes the lessons the disciples are given to prepare them for their great work. Mostly they hear of the dangers and the snags ahead of them. St Paul, too, talks about crucifixion, sharing in his master’s suffering. There are some encouraging words from the third part of the book of Isaiah, and hints of glory to balance the snags in the other two readings.
One thing Covid did spoil was the Religious Education lessons held here each Thursday afternoon. Our catechists were mostly shielding and it was not safe for children to gather without masks and social distancing. We can do something about this now – we can plan to re-introduce the lessons for September. During the next three Sundays of July, we ask parents of children up to year 6 who are not at Catholic schools to let us know that you want RE lessons, by enrolling your child(ren) on the Forms that will be available at church, and handing them in.
We can then enrol teachers and plan ahead before the summer holidays. Instructing your children to know, love, and serve God is one of God’s own laws, and not many parents are up to providing ‘RE Lessons’ themselves. ‘Them up at Church’ can only do our best to help you, but yours is the responsibility. I suspect the children have missed their Thursday sessions. Pray about this, and please spread this news among those you know who have been away from church.
As you will probably have seen in the media, on Friday 24 June, the US Supreme Court struck down the Roe v Wade decision, returning the matter of abortion legislation to individual states. There has been much disinformation spread about the implications of this decision. Lord Alton has published an excellent piece that sets out the key facts about the decision. It can be found on the internet: https.//thecritic.co.uk/reversing-a-tragic-half-century-of-lost-lives/
Only through the guidance of the Holy Spirit can people’s minds be led to see where evil lies. Please continue with your prayers that God will defend the lives of the innocent.
Please pray for the repose of the soul of Shirley Dwyer of Cheshire Grange Care Home, who died last weekend. May she rest in peace.
