The theme of our readings is unmistakeably the goodness and mercy of God, who offers forgiveness to anyone who wishes to make a fresh start. We have this clearly stated in the Wisdom reading, and in the story of Zacchaeus, the little man Jesus noticed and offered his company and friendship to him. The reading from Paul to the people of Thessalonica comes from a time when apparently everyone believed that the second coming of Jesus was very soon. Paul tells them not to ‘jump the gun’.
