READINGS AT MASS
The parable in today’s gospel gets a full explanation from Jesus himself. It’s another farming story:
“Imagine a sower going out to sow”. Grain is so important. Without it growing we have none of the staple food that we depend on. But seed needs looking after. Places that nurture seeds are sensibly called ‘nurseries’. The message Jesus gave the apostles
to pass on is like a seed. We are the ground in which the seed of faith has been planted. If we are the right kind of soil the seed will flourish. The gospel mentions so many ways the seed of faith can die. Bishop Brian Noble once kindly told an assembly of
his priests ‘Notice in the parable it is never the sower’s fault’!
FIRST COMMUNIONS
Congratulations to Isla, Henry, Leoni, Caspar, Amy, Finlay and Maximillian who are celebrating this weekend because they have received Our Lord in Holy Communion for the first time. They and their families have welcomed
the seed of faith. May they all look after it carefully, and so produce a hundredfold…Special thanks to the group of their wonderful parents who have ensured that their attendance record was 100%. Long may it continue. And a word of appreciation for our catechist
volunteers who give up their time and their energy willingly to teach the children.
HOLIDAYS It is great to experience Sunday Mass in a different place when we are on holiday. Most countries abroad will have parish churches where there is Sunday Mass and a
congregation that welcomes visitors. Do make sure you know the time of Mass (ask); there is a Catholic Directory for England and Wales in the presbytery, which you are welcome to explore if you haven’t been successful on the internet.
POST COVID
People seem less worried about being infected now. Perhaps we should be restoring things that were dropped when the epidemic was in full swing. Communion from the chalice, sign of peace, offertory procession, ministers
of communion, children’s liturgy, Thursday RE…In the words of Capt. Picard, ‘Make it so’ Shall we?
NORTHERN STAR PLIGRIMAGES offer a trip to Lourdes Monday – Saturday December 4 – 9 to be there for the feast of the Immaculate Conception (Dec 8). The price £579 (two sharing)
or £714 in a single room at the Hotel Padoue seems a lot, but could you get full board for five nights anywhere in England for that, not to mention return air fare (to Carcassonne ) included? Think about it. Contact 0161 773 2115.
